‘Prep’ or ‘preparatory’ schools are equivalent to the primary and middle schools of the state education sector. The majority cater for children aged up to 13 years, although some IAPS schools take children up to the age of 16. Many have pre-prep and nursery sections that are dedicated to the youngest children.
Typically, a pupil will leave prep school to join a senior school at age 11, 12 or 13. This flexibility is one of the great advantages of the preparatory system; allowing for each child’s individual needs to be met.
