Questions To Ask

There is no definitive list of questions to ask when choosing a school. First, gather as much information as possible about schools that meet your criteria in terms of location, age range, boarding provision (where appropriate) and whether they are single sex or co-educational. The database of IAPS schools can help you with this. The IAPS website has links to member schools; most schools have a record on the ISC website; and all will have prospectuses.

For your short-list draw up a list of questions and arrange to visit the schools. You might ask questions about:

  • School and class sizes
  • Number of staff, staff turnover, specialist staff
  • Which subjects are taught as core and which are optional
  • Homework, tests and liaison between staff and parents
  • The games and sports facilities
  • Which extra-curricular activities are run
  • Boarding arrangements, numbers (including at weekends)
  • The system of care in the school
  • The code of conduct
  • Sanctions or punishments used

  • A parents’ or friends’ association
  • Trips that are run and supervision arrangements
  • School uniform
  • School buses or transport arrangements
  • Fees and what is included and what is extra
  • Schools to which pupils typically transfer

This is not meant to be an exhaustive list but merely a starting point to help parents find a school in which their children will learn and develop.
